Machado’s free-agent tour hits Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies are making their pitch on Thursday afternoon to free agent Manny Machado.

Machado, his wife, Yainee Alonso, and representation arrived at Citizens Bank Park at 12:14 p.m. ET to meet with club officials. Phillies general manager Matt Klentak greeted them at the door. It is the third team Machado has visited this week, along with the White Sox on Monday and the Yankees on Wednesday. It is unclear if he has met with or is scheduled to meet with any other teams.

The Phils are hoping to convince Machado to come to Philadelphia and play third base alongside newly acquired shortstop Jean Segura.

Philadelphia is expected to sign either Machado or Bryce Harper this offseason, although there is internal debate about how far the club wants to go to sign one of them. Sources have told MLB.com that the Phillies prefer Machado over Harper. The Phils left the Winter Meetings last week without meeting Harper in Las Vegas, which is his hometown. A source said nothing should be read into that because the club knows Harper’s free-agent process is going to take time as he seeks a record-breaking contract that could exceed both $300 million and $35 million annually.

Machado’s deal could exceed $300 million, too.
